British Summer Time Festival – Wheatus

‘Cause I’m just a Teenage Dirtbag’…

The day had finally come and I was beyond excited.  You don’t always get the chance to basically see a handful of your childhood heroes on stage in one day.

Luckily I managed to pull myself together and met up with my dearest friends at Marble Arch at midday. The gates opened at 1:30 pm and quite a few people wanted to see the likes of Wheatus, Scouting for girls, The Vamps, Backstreet Boys and McBusted.

By 2pm Hyde Park was already buzzing. So – many – people. It was amazing.

Me and my friends found out that Wheatus were supposed to play a ‘secret’ gig on the Sony Music Unlimited stage, so off we went.

To get access we had to go to the first queue and give the Sony team our favourite song ever, which was then entered into a massive playlist ( no idea though if you can get access to this playlist somewhere). My teams choice were the amazing Vengaboys with their mega hit ‘Ibiza’ – yeah true 90’s kids on the go. 🙂

Once we got our lovely wristbands we had to join the second queue, thanks to the bar being conveniently located a few yards away we quench our thirst with some chilled ciders. Delicious.

At 2:40pm the queue started to move and we were let into the tent. It was a small stage with an even smaller stage but this made the whole performance extra special. Regardless of where you were standing you had a brilliant look on to the stage. The only downside was, it was fricking boiling in there but that didn’t stop the small crowd of 150 go crazy once Wheatus stepped on stage.

Brendan asked the crowed who was already born when they released their first album back in 1995 – it was amazing how only a few hands where raised. Brendan than went on joking that their Facebook page only consists of 15 year olds but that alright.

Wheatus introduced their new single ‘Only You’ which features Josh Devine and Sandy Beales off of One Directions musically gifted band. The song is really nice and the video is amazing. Lego all the way 🙂

The short set was topped with the one everyone had been waiting for – Teenage Dirtbag.

And oh yes – it was kind of epic. That’s all I can say. Let’s face it – this song is the anthem of every teenager. We all have sung the lyrics loud and sometimes even louder at someone’s house party or any other time when we were having the time of our young lives.

This song will forever be one of ‘my’ songs and I’m really glad that I had the chance to see Wheatus perform this one live in such an intimate setting.

Cause we all have been Teenage Dirtbags at some point 😉

If you have enjoyed this, stay tuned as more content about that unforgettable day will be up soon.

British Summer Time Festival – Arcade Fire + Jake Bugg

Hello there,

As we are almost half way through the BST Festival in Hyde Park, I thought I’d share a few bits and bobs with you.

The British Summer Time Festival is traditionally held in Hyde Park for about 10 days each summer and its iconic Great Oak stage is rather ( lovely trees 🙂 )

I managed to get my hands on quite a few tickets, so if you would like to read some more posts about reliving my childhood in one day all thanks to the Backstreet Boys and McBusted, please stay tuned and watch this space.

Thursday 3rd July

Jake Bugg & Arcade Fire

I was lucky enough to finish work half an hour earlier, thanks to my very kind boss, so that I managed to arrive on the festival grounds at around 6:15pm for the first day of the British Summer Time Festival.

I met up with some friends and we kind of straight headed for the Great Oak stage as Jake Bugg was due to perform at 6:50, it was just enough time to grab a beer on the go.

The space in front of the stage was split between Premium View and General Access, as though the GA area wasn’t too big we got a quite decent spot with a satisfying view.

The set started at 6:50pm sharp and it was just lovely. I must say, I do have a thing for Jake’s music. It’s just so beautiful and I could listen to him all the time. Needless to say, I had a great time. The sun was still out and everybody was singing along to his recent single ‘Messed Up Kids’. Jake Bugg was given a one hour set which was spiked with great songs like ‘Two Fingers’ and ‘Taste It’.

Of course he finished with a smashing performance of ‘Lightning Bolt’ and I am sure that everyone in front of the stage was singing along with him and generally enjoying themselves. Except for that idiot next to us, who was constantly shouting ‘Shiiiiiit’. Well Sir, if you don’t like someone’s music, simply don’t listen to it and stop ruining it for everybody who came to the concert purely because of the music.

Special shout out to the lady next to me who offered help by advising the guy that if he needs to take a shit, the toilets are just to his left. 🙂

After the lovely performance of Jake Bugg, we headed for the food stalls and had some burgers. And more beer. The festival site itself is quite big and if you have some spare change you can treat yourself to a wide variety of food and a more limited range of drinks. There are also several smaller stages scattered around the site, featuring even more live acts.

Arcade Fire were the main act for the opening night and hell did the amount of people doubled or tripled while we were eating. It was obvious that everyone came straight from work, as the crowd was a nice mixture of business men dancing around mixed with fans proudly wearing their Jake Bugg or Arcade Fire Shirts. Some Arcade Fire fans even went for a sparkling make up – so pretty.  🙂

Unfortunately we didn’t have a good spot for the main act Arcade Fire and at first stood quite far on the left but as we couldn’t really see we tried finding a spot a bit down the back were we could at least see the stage properly. However, the show was awesome, so many reflektors on stage.

I had never seen them life before but I was left well impressed by their show and I think it’s safe to say that Arcade Fire did themselves proud by finishing their European Tour with an impressive show in Hyde Park.

All in all the hottest day of the year – so far – was well spent in Hyde Park with great live music, loads of sunshine and some great people. Just how I like it.

As mentioned above, watch this space for more reviews about the Backstreet Boys, Wheatus and McBusted.
